Recap: The Storm edge the Mets 4-2 in the opening game for both squads. The Storm scored in the bottom of the first inning when Ryan Maguire doubled with one out and starting pitch Jason Newbery drove him in with an RBI single to help his cause. The score stayed 1-0 until the 8th inning when the Mets cleanup hitter banged a double to deep left center. The next batter singled to center. The runner score as the ball skipped through center fielder Bryan Padavano's legs and advancing the hitter to second base. He then score when stealing third and catcher Michael Grady threw wide of third and into left field. However, the Storm battled back in the bottom of the 8th as Mr. Clutch, Anthony Chinea, boomed a double to left center, and then was balked over to third. Chinea scored to tie the game when Sean Byrne hit a ball to the shortstop which was bobbled. Grady walked to make it first and second. Right fielder Rich Freire, who tried to sacrifice, bunted perfectly and reach first on no throw to load the bases. Left fielder Ryan Bower walked to bring in the eventual winning run and after a filder's choice to home, Padovano walked to bring home the 4th run for the Storm. After a leadoff walk to start the 9th, Newbery got the next three batters to seal the win.
Newbery pitched a great game, throwing a complete game victory, aloowing only 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 batters. The infield played spectacular defense, turning a couple of double plays and some smart heads up plays as well. The Mets pitching staff held its own, allowing only 6 storm hits (3 doubles) and striking out 8. However, three of the five walks happened in the 8th inning ruining the day for their starting pitcher.
